About Me
I have worked in roles supporting people in need for over a decade now and, amongst others, I hold qualifications in youth work, social work, practice education and clinical supervision.
After gaining experience working with clients across a broad range of areas of need, I became interested in working with those who work to support others.
I am particularly interested in working with stress and distress and their physical manifestation and how oppression, prejudice and unconscious bias impact us.
More recently, I have become interested in neuroplasticity and how findings from neuroscience can support us in our work and lives.
How I Work
I work from a strengths-based perspective and this forms a core part of the way I offer training, clinical supervision and my approach as a Practice Educator. A strengths-based approach works by looking through a lens of what is already working well and using that as a platform to build rapport and explore learning and development needs.
Acknowledging strengths is something that many struggle with, but I have seen it have a powerful impact in terms of establishing rapport and creating change. In recent years, there have been exciting developments in the field of neuroscience, further evidencing the benefits of a strengths-based approach
My Philosophy
Authenticity – I strive to stay in line with my core beliefs and be transparent throughout our work together.
Empathy – I am committed to trying to understand your thoughts and feelings.
A sense of curiosity – As part of the our work together, I want to understand your experiences, interests, views, thoughts and feelings.
Constantly striving for anti-oppressive practice
‘Anti-oppressive practice’ conveys it is not enough to be non-racist, non-sexist or non-homophobic, but that we must actively work to counter these everyday attitudes and behaviours. As well as strongly challenging blatantly discriminatory attitudes, policies and practices, I believe it is essential that we work to address unconscious bias (the beliefs or prejudices we hold about others that we are unaware of) and the harm this bias can cause if left unconscious. I endeavour to uncover and challenge my own biases and connect with people whose experiences differ from my own. It is important for me to be open if someone is critical or offended by the way I have worded or expressed something and I will continue to educate myself with the aims of being a better practitioner and more compassionate person.
